BLOG POST 10 - EDITING RELFECTION

Are you enjoying the editing process?

is it difficult why or why not?

what programs softwares are you using?

Overall, I am enjoying the editing process. Editing is easy because it is simply putting everything together to form a continuous sequence that tells a story. However, it is also hard because continuity editing requires large amount of work. Unlike music videos or show reels, film are in logical orders, so everything have to make sense and set the initial exposition. Also, as an opening of the film, there has to be some kind of enigma code which intrigue audience interest and make them want to keep watching, include the title sequence.Editing supports mise en scene to sets successful enigma code. Also, for continuity editing, should contain dynamics edits to avoid the opening from being boring. Also, smooth transition, connotative messages are all relies on the work of editing, so to some extent, a good editing is difficult. I still enjoying the process of editing because seeing the final outcome is really satisfying, also I am learning new knowledge and techniques through editing our film opening, so I enjoyed the process of fulfilled myself with new skills and knowledges.

The software Used are JIanyingnPro, Premire Pro, and wink. I mainly used JIanying Pro to edit, Pr to add effects and Wink to improve the quality of footage.

What research have you do to develop your skill?

  1. research of title sequence — title sequence set the tone of the film and gives out enigma code for the upcoming plot. I often include the very main message of the whole film. Often super stylish towards the genre conventions of the film. Therefore, in order to find a suitable way for our title sequence, I looked at many title sequences of thriller genre films. Pick up codes and conventions, their editing techniques for the inspiration of our own edits.

  2. Continuity editing — continuity editing seems simple, but actually clearly tells a storyline with enigma code being set requires large amount of research. Therefore, I watched tutorials on youtube for continuity editing.

  3. Research about specific editing technique — We were planing to have a long montage in the film opening, but montage isn’t just putting fragmented shots together. Montage has its own rhythm and each shot within a montage has its own purposes, which following either time or emotional build up. Tutorials I watched:

  4. Research in using softwares — tutorial in Pr, Jianying

Does the editing following story board

Our story board was also keep changing as well as the filming goes on. But the majority of editing is following the latest version of storyboard. Reason why majority of editing is following story board is because filming is following story board, and the storyboards are modified several times for the plot to make sense. Planing is super important, editing following storyboard saves a lot of thinking times on that should we out after this footage, and we can use these time to polish, adjust and experiment on new editing techniques. However, there are still parts that does not following story board. This is because we cannot visualize shot transitions and special effects from draft and drawing, so some time the outcome might not stick with what we expect the transitions to be, therefore we have to think about a new to connect between shots.

Did you need to color grade?

As a thriller genre film opening, our color grading usage is not extreme. But we still need to emphasize on the contrast of lighting — chiaroscuro and low key lighting. Involves the adjustment of brightness and contrast, reduce the bright ness and increase the contrast — create a suspense atmosphere. For example,

For the montage, I color trade on the RGB color. I deliberately chose green and red as the main color tone and putting them cross connecting each other because they are complementary colors and make bold contrast as opposite color tone as well, I raised the saturation of green and red tone o purpose to make the contrast more clearly.

Why is your editing appropriate for your genre and audience?

mise en scene:

here are some examples of mise en scene

Title “Daisy”

Daisy is a flower which represent purity and innocence, however juxtaposed with Daisy’s real personality—further informing Daisy’s identity of being double sided.

School uniform

Age group of teenagers, and “E” group. Engage with our targeted audience by giving audience sense of familiarization, audience empath with the characters.

Knife

Potential violence for people who enjoys thriller genre.

Oscar statue

Showing the histrionic personality disorder of Daisy. The cross cutting between Daisy and the statue also gives the sense of uniformity between them

Color coding:

Mirror scene

Take the mirror scene as an example, the jump cut o Daisy wearing red bathrobe issss her ideal mind projection. Color purple and blue projected from both sides not only implying Daisy being multi-faceted, but also create an ideal personal space inside her mind. The color of lights is highly saturated, gives a mysterious verisimilitude sense to create Daisy’s self-utopia.

Flashback montage

Within the flashback montage, color in green and red tone are complementary color, they are not often put together for a please aesthetic. But this effect of being not harmonious emphasizes the juxtaposition.

shots, angle, movements

slow zoom — intensify emotions

high angle -- portrayed “vulnerability”, but deeper meaning is pretend to be weak — The hunter always appears as the prey

close-ups -- capture micro expression — convention in thriller, eye contact matters

sound track

narration - side information for audience, first person narration so subjective -audience can interpret from siddfent persepective. Daisy’s narration seems like telling the audience she is weak and being recriminated against in this school, but “they don’t know who I truly am”has double sided meaning: students judge Daisy overwhelmingly without knowing anything, it is unfair. Daisy has another side which does not exposed yet.

hum - adding on thriller elements — hum following the notes of the bam give sense of domination and manipulation from the main character. And established character by adding the hum

bgm -My loving daddy — lyrics matter — create connotative messages if audience e pay attention to the lyrics.
